How To Arrange…

the perfect blooms

photo 1

Fresh blooms in the home, makes a happy home!  I love to buy in season blooms each week or every other week to brighten up my kitchen or the living room. I usually sit mine in my kitchen window or on the dining table. Since the hubby has made the dining table his studying haven, I sometimes nestle my blooms right on my bar table. This season I’ve been loving Alosmestria.  Not the most beautiful name, but they are beautiful and last a long time.

I’ve had this arrangement below for almost 2 weeks.

Almost 2 weeks!

Yep, there is a method  to keeping them long and pretty.  I learned this method by taking a few flower arranging classes here.  Loved every minute of it and the instructors are amazing and sweet.  Think I’ll take a  few more soon!

Here’s what you do. . .

get one of your favorite containers. I love using a water pitcher, adds a bit of a rustic feeling to your arrangement.

Unpack your blooms and sit them in the sink

gently tear off the leaves, leaving the leaves closer to the top. you don’t want your leaves hanging out in the water.  causes the water to get dirty and moldy and the flowers die quickly.

after the stems are free of leaves. Wash the stems to get excess dirt off.   Just keeps things clean.

photo 4

take one stem at a time, layer one stem on top of the other and turn.  keep layering and turning until your last stem, creating a twisted look. keep them really tight.

make sure they are snug and twisted.

fill container up with lukewarm water

fill container up with tepid water

cut the stems at an angle to your desired length (depends on your container) and put in water immediately. this will make sure they don't seal off and not drink the water

cut the stems at an angle to your desired length (depends on your container) and put in water immediately. this will make sure they don’t seal off and not drink the water.  remember flowers are living things too, if you cut they try to heal fast by sealing the ends of the stems.

drop them in the water and adjust to your likeing.

Note: change the water and cut an inch off the stem every 2 to 3 days.  Helps to keep them longer and happier!

beautiful blooms every time!

  1. Question? Sometimes when you get flowers, they come with that powdered flower food. Do you find that’s worth using or do you get just as good results by keeping the water fresh? Good tutorial!

    • Great question! You definitely can use the white powder if it comes with your blooms. After you add the water, put one pack and stir to dissolve. When you change the water leave a little of the old water.
